Feed Refresh
Who pops up in your feed? Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Twitter, etc.
We spend a tremendous amount of time scrolling our phones. And while that’s a topic for another day, it may be helpful to take a minute to refresh & curate what we’re looking at.
For example, there’s a woman who sent a friend request to me on Facebook a few years ago. I know her family and I enjoy seeing photos of her grandkids and reading updates about their family business. I knew at the time that our views about politics don’t align, but it was largely irrelevant. Until lately . . .
She’s been posting all sorts of things that simply are not true with great fervor and conviction. As I scrolled by, something in me shifted. I’d been happily looking at friends’ vacation photos and reading helpful tips from groups I belong to and then I just felt . . . ugh.
So I muted her.
She’ll never know, which is fine. I don’t need to confront her (it would be pointless anyway) and I don’t need to make a production of it. But I want you to know that if there are people or accounts you follow that create shifts in your mood or how you feel in the moment . . . you can let them go.
This isn’t about surrounding ourselves only with people who agree with us or choosing to become irresponsibly unaware of what’s going on in the world (though we all have to consume news in doses we can handle). It’s about choosing a few reputable sources for news and then following people and accounts that bring you joy or that are helpful.
There’s a lot of terrible going on out there and we need to find joy where we can.
It’s not unkind to walk away from voices that negatively impact your wellbeing.
We’re bombarded with information (good and bad) all day long, but sometimes we forget that we have a choice in what shows up in our feeds.
xo,
Beth
