The last week has felt more like riding a Tilt-a-Whirl than a roller coaster. Key fact: I’ve never liked the Tilt-a-Whirl or roller coasters.
Here are just a few emotions that have rolled through my nervous system in the last 7 days:
fear
anger
worry
joy
gratitude
love
awe
panic
anxiety
pride
peace
shock
astonishment
confusion
frustration
and overwhelming happiness
I may have missed a few. ;)
Here’s the thing. This world will break your heart right in two. And in the same moment, it will make you so glad you’re alive to witness some unfathomable beauty that you lose your breath.
Big, scary things happened in the last week. And also, a friend whose life has been harder anyone’s should walked me through her new(ish), perfect house in a place she only ever dreamed of living years ago. She awakes and goes to sleep every day with the most beautiful view of water outside her bedroom window. She kept saying over and over that she is so content, so happy, living this life she never thought possible when she was younger.
Another friend’s house burned to the ground, but what was rebuilt in its place is so lovely and so much better suited to her family than what was there before. And isn’t that often the way of things (and, of course, we’re not just talking about “things”)? Now and then, things have to burn all the way down before they can be rebuilt better, stronger, more beautiful than before.
Most of the time, we can’t see beyond the burning, when everything is scary and uncertain. We can’t see the beauty that’s around the corner. So while we wait, we do what we can. We drink a little more water, walk a little more, get some sleep, eat an extra salad here and there, and cling tight to those who love us in all the phases — burning, rebuilding, and contentment.
Carry on.

Beth
